Favorite referencing style

I’m most familiar with the Turabian referencing style, but the APA style is growing on me!

Why I became an editor

The simple answer is: I love language. Communication is at its best when words flow, and sentences are clear and concise. My goal as an editor is to help others achieve this level of communication.

Background and experience

In my role as a professional biologist, I have edited and proofread technical and scientific documents for over 20 years. I have also written two master’s theses, and published peer-reviewed articles. In my multi-disciplinary work environment, well-structured communication that’s accessible to a variety of audiences is a must. Much of my day is spent either preparing or reviewing written communication, including briefing notes, regulatory submissions, and incident reports. As such, proofreading and editing have become almost second nature to me.

Why I love proofreading and editing

What I enjoy most about proofreading is punctuation: placing that missing semicolon, adding (or removing) a comma, tweaking a long sentence with a period. Perfect punctuation turns good writing into great writing.

Favorite book:

The Handmaid’s Tale by Margaret Atwood

Hobbies:

When I’m not proofreading, chances are I’m outside with my dog. I love pretty much all things outdoors, and seeing as how I live in an outdoor paradise, you will often find me hiking, mountain biking, or rock climbing.

Editing tips:

The first time I read a document, I focus on spelling errors. This gives me an idea of the tone and style, which are important to keep in mind during subsequent revisions.
